I am a person in long-term recovery from substance use. In 2003 I was locked up after a drinking and driving accident had the very worst possible circumstances, people lost their lives. It was my fault. There was nothing I could do. There was no way to take this back. I started writing in prison as a response to this. Writing truly saved me. It gave me a place to go, a place to put all of this...stuff. I faced everything that one would expect to face in prison. I had suicidal thoughts for years, of course. I was threatened with physical violence, threatened with sexual violence. I made a discovery in there. There was nothing that they could do to me that I couldn't write about.
